Riding under the moniker of Mode7 is the co-founder and former Bay Beat Collective [BBC] member, Raffael Kably. BBC, established in 2008 was formed to promote dubstep and drum ‘n’ bass through DJ sets. Four years on and the sound engineer/DJ has moved on to producing, dropping his first solo project called ‘All In Faded Days’.
Mode7 is the experimental playground Kably has manufactured for himself. Having spent the last year brewing under the surface the debut EP serves more as a collection of Kably’s personal favourites than a structured journey of sound. ‘All In Faded Days’ is loaded with four tracks hat are far from the domains of drum ‘n’ bass and dubstep but venture into the more orchestral and downtempo/lo-fi sounds – a lush combination of live and programmed recordings, a slight Ninja Tune-esq feel if you will.
There’s another album I’m currently listening to which has a similar sounding vibe. I think we’re seeing an evolution of sound from
some of the DJ/producers from India, have they had enough of dubstep now? Are they moving on to the brooding beatscapes that ooze reality, imagination and rawness? …
